Getting from Edinburgh Airport to the City Centre: A Quick Guide

If you’re landing at Edinburgh Airport and need to get to the heart of the city, you’ve got a few easy options to choose from. Here’s a rundown of the ways to get from the airport to Edinburgh’s city centre.

Tram

The Edinburgh Tram is one of the most convenient ways to reach the city centre. The tram stop is located right outside the airport terminal and trams run every 7–10 minutes.

You will get to central Edinburgh (St Andrew Square or Princes Street) in about 30–35 minutes. Just remember to pay for your ticket before you get on the tram. If you need any help there are always a number of staff members there to give you a hand. Tickets will be checked by an Inspector at some point during your journey so hang on to them.

Luggage must be placed in the racks located in each carriage.

• Cost: £7.90 for a single adult ticket and £9.50 for an open return
• Frequency: Every 7-10 minutes from 06:26 am until 22:48 pm
• Journey Time: 30-35 minutes

Airlink Bus (Service 100)

Another reliable option is the Airlink 100 bus, which runs 24/7 between the airport and Waverley Bridge, next to Waverley Station and just a short walk from Princes Street. Buses leave frequently and the journey takes about 25-30 minutes depending on traffic.

• Cost: £6 for a single ticket and £8.50 for an open return
• Frequency: Every 10 minutes during the day, every 30 minutes at night
• Journey Time: 25-30 minutes

Taxi

If you’re travelling with a lot of luggage or prefer a direct route, you can grab a taxi or use ride-sharing apps like Uber. Taxis are available right outside the airport, and while it’s the priciest option, it’s probably also the fastest way to get into town and the taxi will take you straight to the door of your accommodation.

4 people in a taxi will usually be cheaper than four people taking the tram.  However, 4 people with luggage may struggle to fit into one taxi.

Private Transfer

If you’re after a more comfortable and personalised service, you can book a private transfer in advance. Car Hire

For those planning on exploring outside the City, hiring a car at the airport is another option.  We don’t really recommend having a car while you are staying in Edinburgh as parking is challenging, expensive and driving in the City Centre is not much fun.
