We all dream of the perfect trip to Scotland—meticulously planned, long-awaited, and completely hassle-free. But sometimes, despite our best efforts, things don’t go quite as expected.

This post isn’t here to worry you — it’s here to help! By learning from real-life experiences of past travellers, you can avoid common pitfalls and handle unexpected challenges with ease. And remember, these kinds of hiccups can happen anywhere in the world, not just in Scotland!

Before you leave

You’ve done it—everything is booked! Accommodation, car rental, visitor attractions, and even restaurant reservations (for the meticulous planners among us 😏). The excitement is building, and you’re ready to go.

But before you set off, have you checked that your driving licence is valid?

✅ Yes? Great! Now just make sure you pack it and take it with you 😊

❌ No? If it’s expired, you’ll need to renew it before you travel—car rental companies in the UK require the original valid licence, and without it, you won’t be able to rent a car.

Do you have an ETA? An ETA is an Electronic Travel Authorisation and it is required by everyone visiting the UK (excluding those from Ireland). You apply online and it normally only takes a few minutes to be approved. However, we would advise submitting your application when you book your flights just in case there is a delay.

And finally – is your passport valid?

On Your Way

You’re all set for your trip, but bad weather delays your flight. Instead of arriving in the morning as planned, you’re now landing in the evening. What next?

This is when you realise — maybe picking up a rental car immediately after a long-haul flight and driving 100 miles to your first overnight stop wasn’t the best idea.

After 10–12 hours in airports and on a plane, you’re exhausted. You haven’t slept properly, and now you’re facing a long drive on unfamiliar roads, possibly in the dark. That’s assuming, of course, the car rental branch is still open when you arrive.

It Gets Worse…

Your flight finally lands, but now your luggage is delayed—or worse, lost. You’re stressed, and there’s paperwork to fill out. Normally, this wouldn’t be an issue for your car rental, but if you’re running late, drop us an email or call the car rental branch to let us know. If it’s close to closing time, contact the branch IMMEDIATELY to avoid any issues.

💡 Top Tip: If you’re travelling with others, split up—one person waits for the luggage or handles paperwork while another picks up the car. Remember the person picking up the car needs to bring the driving licences for all the drivers.

Avoid the Stress Altogether

If your itinerary includes Edinburgh or Glasgow, plan to stay there first! You won’t need a car in the city, and by delaying your pickup until you’re ready for your road trip, you eliminate the risk of complications with your car rental due to flight delays or lost luggage.

After a fantastic few days in Edinburgh or Glasgow, you’re finally picking up your rental car and heading off on your road trip. Exciting, right? But did you know that the North West of Scotland is one of the most remote areas in Europe?

Road Challenges You Might Not Expect

Scotland’s scenery is breathtaking, but its roads? Not always in the best condition. Potholes are a real issue, and unfortunately, you didn’t see one in time—now you’ve got a damaged tyre.

No problem, right? Just grab the spare. Except… almost all modern cars don’t come with a spare tyre. Instead, you might find:

🔹 A temporary tyre—good enough to get you to a garage for a proper replacement.

🔹 A sealant kit (“goo”)—which can sometimes provide a quick fix, but not always.

Now You Need Help… But Your Phone Won’t Work

You reach for your phone to call the breakdown service… and discover it doesn’t make outgoing calls. You’re stuck.

Luckily, a passing motorist stops to check if you’re okay and kindly lets you use their phone. The breakdown service assures you they’ll be there as soon as possible.

But remember—this is the remote North West of Scotland. Breakdown services are limited, especially on weekends, and all rental companies use the same few providers. This means wait times can be much longer than expected.

Eventually, help arrives, and a friendly mechanic tows you to their garage to replace the tyre. But by now, you’ve missed check-in at your next accommodation. A working phone would have allowed you to call ahead and let them know.

Heading home

You’ve had an incredible trip — the best holiday ever—but now it’s time to head home. Your final nights were spent on one of Scotland’s beautiful islands, soaking in the scenery.

Then, the night before departure, you get a text: your ferry back to the mainland has been cancelled. You’ve been rebooked on a ferry the following day.

Yes, this does happen—sometimes due to bad weather, other times because a ferry has been taken out of service. Either way, you’re now stuck for an extra 24 hours.
